If they occur around puberty or pregnancy, it is not necessary to seek medical care for stretch marks. Stretch mark development is normal at these times. If stretch marks occur spontaneously, however, without any relation to life events, they may indicate the onset of a disease, such as Cushing disease. In this case, consulting a doctor is recommended.
Can You Prevent Stretch Marks?
It is challenging to prevent stretch marks. Stretch marks do not appear to occur when the skin stretches gradually rather than abruptly. Therefore, if possible, rapid changes in body size should be avoided. Because stretch marks are small scars, rapid body growth can lead to skin tearing and more stretch marks. Slower changes in body size can permit more gradual adjustment of the skin. It is less likely that people with better skin elasticity and less rigid collagen will develop stretch marks.
